Lately, we have been seeing quite a few “knock-off” or “fake” merchandise that customers have been bringing to us to install. Car audio is no different than watches. There are companies out there that manufacture products that look like the real thing but, they are not. The majority of these “knock-offs” are coming from internet sales. After we pointed out that the product was a fake, no customer has been able to contact the person that they bought the item from. Either the phone number is disconnected or the person refuses to answer emails. Make sure that you know who you are purchasing from and that they are authorized to sell the product that you are interested in purchasing. This will ensure that the products are “the real deal”. Do not take their word for it when they say that they are an authorized dealer. Call the manufacturer and verify that they are authorized and that you will have a warranty.

Also, just because you paid someone to install your products does NOT mean that you received a professional job. In this industry knowing what you are doing comes with experience and training. Just because someone has had business cards made stating that they do “Professional Installation” does not make them an expert. Actually, they are a danger to you and your vehicle! Typically these people have had no training whatsoever. They are actually using your vehicle to learn on. Who do you think is going to pay for damages that they do to your vehicle? They do not have insurance or even a business license. So you are going to have to pay for the damages. If the vehicle is in someone else’s name (i.e. parent), how are you going to explain the damage?

An improper installation can be very costly to the owner of the vehicle. Make sure that you know who your installer is and their qualifications. Ask to see the tools that they are going to use to install and set-up your system. If they do not have the proper tools or knowledge to use the tools, find a qualified shop or person to do the job! If the shop or person does not have and know how to use an RTA, multi meter and oscilloscope, they are NOT qualified!
